The only rule for Librarians Wanted is that we love the music we choose. The DJ sets and the bands - we don’t care about what is cool and what is right and what is indiepop, only, really, what is love (“Baby don’t hurt me”). Yes, it should be a little bit like feeling in love, hearing a song or a band for the first time and knowing in that instant it’s your new favourite. And it should be about meeting new friends you can leave alongside, smiling, when the evening is over, even if you entered the gig a little bit shy and awkward and on your own.

X-mas card making at Makerhood, The Dogstar Sunday 2 Dec. Funtimes!

December 2012 is special to us. It’s two years since our first Librarians Wanted gig at the Dogstar in Brixton - the very night we learned how to DJ. That gig was headlined by the magnificent Evans the Death, and it was the start of what’s been two amazing years and will hopefully be many more LW years even though we live in different places.

Our 2nd birthday is coming up at The Victoria in Mile End in a week and we hope you will be there! But now, a bit about our old home, The Dogstar, probably one of our favourite venues ever! (particularly the ballroom)

We were lucky to be back at this place on Sunday 2 of December. We played all our favourite songs (and some Christmas hits by Lisa Bouvier, The Pogues and Mariah Carey!) in the downstairs pub. It was a great atmosphere where people were making Christmas cards, there was pantomime and live bands - all hosted by the great local initiative Makerhood. Thanks so much for having us - we will be back anytime you’d like to have us!

Andrew Clarke from Makerhood sang some beautiful songs in a santa hat!

That eve we were asked to come back this coming Sunday (9 December), by the lovely people at Craftyfox Market. And of course we will! We will be based in the pop-up tea lounge in the 1st floor ballroom between 11am and 2pm, playing our indiepop and all kinds of music while eating cupcakes and having a cuppa or three. Then we’ll be buying the rest of our xmas pressies..

We hope to see you at the LW 2nd birthday at The Victoria…

We hope to see you at the Dogstar from 11am, perfect timing for cupcake brunch! And we also hope to see you on the 14th at The Victoria, Mile End, where our friends Stars in Coma, Lost Summer Kitten, Electrophonvintage and The Choo Choo Trains will play some lovely lovely songs. OH, and on the 18th at Victoria & Jacob and Hoshal Patrick’s Christmas Party where we’ll also be DJing, and last but not least Playhouse at the Waiting Room where LW’s ‘DJ Powar-Cliffe’ will rock the party with Nat and Lauren and some others. So much library theme music in December… and we hope you’ll be there!

LWxx

LW's 2nd birthday, 14 Dec: Stars in Coma (SE), Lost Summer Kitten (SE), Electrophönvintage and The Choo Choo Trains

Librarians Wanted turns two years old this December - and what an incredible two years it’s been for us hosting our favourite bands!

Within those two years we’ve all grown up a little, we’re drinking a little less Jaeger, we are living in two different countries, (three if you count Cambridge as a country) but we are still three friends who love dancing and fistpumping to the music we adore.

(We’ve been slacking off on the cupcake baking lately though, we blame it on leaving that magical measuring cup behind in Bethnal Green)

So come join us for our very special birthday celebrations at The Victoria, Mile End. It’s all for free of course, and we will provide the birthday hats too.

And our dear, dear friends Stars in Coma are joining us all the way from Sweden! It will be pretty spectacular judging on their first LW performance in May 2011 back at the Dogstar, and their recent Indiepopdays Berlin gig where they looked and sounded like superstars, no less.

When Stars in Coma played Librarians Wanted for the first time, in May 2011.

Stars in Coma have a special place in our hearts as Librarians Wanted met during their gig at Indietracks in 2010. And so Peacebloom and these people can be thanked for a lot of things in our lives, the club night and people we have gotten to know. It was our big aim to book them after that festival, and so we did a year and a half ago. Now they’re making a very welcome return and we hope you’ll be there to dance!

Roo LW tattooed Stars in Coma’s name (in marker pen) on his arm the last time they played…

Oh, and they are not the only indiepop darlings coming over from one of our favourite countries, oh no! We’ve got more!

Lost Summer Kitten, sweeter than Swedish apple pie with vanilla ice cream, will be sharing their beautiful melodies with us. We dare say they are better (looking, too) than First Aid Kit? Come listen and judge for yourself!

And then… Let’s not forget Electrophönvintage! This must be London’s indiepop supergroup, consisting of so many of our favourite musicians. its members have played LW in a variety of bands; Pocketbooks and The Sunny Street —- and Electrophönvintage…. as Remi played solo two songs at our last birthday. But now they are playing a whole set as a full band. (with or without a drummer - but we do like handclaps too!)

Oh, and we have one more treat for you… The Choo Choo Trains! These girls could be compared to other lovelies such as Haiku Salut and The Middle Ones, but they’ve got their own London swagger to it, if that word can be used about indiepop. We fell in love with their songs and hope they will play the one about Oslo, as 2 of 3 LWs have a connection to this awesome city.

And then there will be dancing, a bunch of lovely people, and it is all for FREE. Our birthday present for ourselves and you.

Happy birthday to us, happy birthday, everyone.

Rupert, David and Silja LWxx

(Facebook event here)

—-__—-_—_———___——-———_____

Librarians Wanted DJing at Hangover Lounge, The Lexington, this Sunday!

We’ve been asked to DJ at the lovely Hangover Lounge at The Lexington, Angel, this Sunday (21st of October) and are mega excited!
Librarians Wanted are extremely happy to host our friends Banana and Louie’s magnificent Alphabet Soup album launch, at the Victoria, Mile End Friday 7 September.

Who’s Banana and who’s Louie is a secret, but the band consists of Matthew and Sharon from one of our favourite bands, A Fine Day For Sailing, so if you miss the lovely AFDFS you’ll not be disappointed, B&L’s songwriting is in the same vein, with sweet harmonies and lyrics that really tell stories. And they may even have a couple of guest musicians from said band.

LW were very moved when we were mentioned in a B&L song about the best year yet, 2011… the year of Jens, libraries, dancing and the beginning of many of our London friendships. So Banana and Louie’s album feels like an essential part of the 2012 chapter.

Banana and Louie will play their album in full, so the series of inter-linked songs become one piece. And to tell their story they are playing with the wonderful A Little Orchestra.

We will somehow squeeze in 10-15 orchestra members on stage, and next to the stage and if not in various corners, and they will help make it a very special autumn evening.

ALO is a pop orchestra. They’ve collaborated with heroes such as Darren Hayman, The Pipettes, Elizabeth from Allo Darlin’, Pocketbooks, Shirley Lee of Spearmint and The Loves, and we can still think back to their performance at Indietracks 2011 as one of our top festival memories. Now they’ve helped B&L record their album, too.

Before Banana and Louie and A Little Orchestra enter the stage we’ve got some other popsters on. Model Village is a folksy pop band from London and Cambridge and have been dubbed “as deft as The Shins at their finest and utterly, completely ace with it” (The Line of Best Fit). We’ve wanted to host them for quite a while and finally it’s happening!

And then of course, it’s the return of Lisa Bouvier, a true LW favourite, both as a person and a fantastic, dancy, bouncy singer! Last year she played our Moustache of Insanity album launch, and we need our Lisa energy fix, so she’s back for this autumn’s album launch too. When we played her Capital City song at the Indietracks disco and people were jumping around like insane we got the proof that her new, sparkly album Made in Lisa should be in discos around the world!

And of course we’ll be playing our favourite records to fistpump to inbetween and after the bands, so we hope you’ve taken your vitamins and that you’re ready to dance, dance, dance! We can’t promise glowstick bracelets this time, but we can promise you fun! And it’s all free so you don’t even need to remember your library card! Indietracks every year until we die. ♥ ♥ ♥ Forever and ever.

We’ll be playing our favourite tunes (and of course dancing like crazy too) in the tram shed after the bands on the Saturday night - and we’re wondering - is there such a thing as a twee rave?

(without drugs and dodgy, spiky haircuts, but with cardigans, and happy, dancy people)!

___——-__——-___——-__-————_——-

The summer of 2010 Rupert and Silja ventured to their very first Indietracks with the cheapest and probably least waterproof tents from the Argos stock. At a gig we met David - who introduced himself by asking, “Are you Swedish?” and none of us were. And so the story of the three Librarians Wanted began. (and ironically we’ve hosted a lot of Swedish bands since…)

Someone at the festival joked that we should form a band, but with limited musical talents, maybe DJing would be our thing instead. We all had a past (and a present) of making romantic/depressive/hopeful mixtapes for long lost or potential or totally unfulfilled loves.

Before we left Indietracks for London we’d toasted to starting our own club night and to learn how to DJ and bake. We had our first show in December 2010 with Evans the Death headlining and since then we’ve hosted lots of our favourite bands, always with (more or less deformed) cupcakes and a library card discount.

The only rule for Librarians Wanted is that we love the music we choose. The DJ sets and the bands - we don’t care about what is cool and what is right and what is indiepop, only, really, what is love (“Baby, don’t hurt me”). Yes, it should be a little bit like falling in love, hearing a song or a band for the first time and knowing in that instant it’s your new favourite. And it should be about meeting new friends you can leave alongside, smiling, when the evening is over, even if you entered the room a little bit shy and awkward and on your own.

We’re excited to be hosting three great bands this May! We’re at The Victoria, in-between Mile End station and Victoria park. Our last night there had a great atmosphere and was loads of fun, so we’re back again! It’s a charming pub and does great American Diner style food. So why not head straight there after work to get yourself a good seat and a burger before the bands start!

This time, we’re very excited to be able to present the following three brilliant acts for the night.

Ghosts You Echo are a London based 3 piece, that utilise an ensemble of sounds ranging from keyboard to violin.

‘Taught, dark, percussive songs filtered through this one woman band’s unique musical vision. Her DIY approach, using vintage drum machines and battered guitars, is generating a lot of airplay. And with her stellar set at last year’s Emerging Proms Festival, the future is looking bright for Ghosts You Echo’ Roundhouse.org.uk

One Man Destruction Show is Adam Harmer, a rock and roll playing one man band. He’s got all the percussion an act could ever need.

‘Within seconds of him starting, the curious crowd are grinning in disbelief at one man making such a wonderful racket’
http://www.i94bar.com

Tender Objects are an Anglo-Swedish indiepop band, with jangling 12-string electric guitars and male-female vocals, whose debut release is a split CD EP on Dufflecoat Records.

‘Tender Objects are the next big thing!’
Anorakcitypop podcast

FB event: http://www.facebook.com/events/327866670620659/
Last FM event: http://www.last.fm/event/3287981+Librarians+Wanted

Timings to follow shortly!

Rupert, David and Silja LWxx

LW presents: Just Handshakes (We're British), Alto45, Hoshal Patrick, 13 April *FREE*

We’re very excited to announce the second Librarians Wanted gig this year! This time we’re at a lovely east end boozer called The Victoria, located in-between Mile End station and Victoria park. This pub effuses charm and does great American Diner style food. So why not head straight there after work to get yourself a good seat and a burger before the bands start!

Speaking of the bands, we’re so excited to be able to present the following three brilliant acts for the night.

Just Handshakes (We’re British) are a four-piece from Leeds, formed on a dingy industrial estate and bonded over their shared love of gin and Swedish pop.

“Their dynamic blend of bright vocals, jangly guitars and casio adoration, could add colour to the gloomiest of lyrics.” Drowned In Sound

Alto45 are a lab-coat wearing diy-fi pop trio from Norwich. They’ve recently released their second album. They sing songs about the sea, the moon and robots planning world domination.

“Casio-esque interstellar synth-fi to slow, lulling indie-scapes” Drowned In Sound

Hoshal Patrick is a London-based musical duo consisting of Alex & James. They make eccentric pop music involving giants out at sea, birds flying through space, nonsensical rhyme in 7/8, references to Rosemary’s Baby and the occasional soul-singing robot.

“A bit like MGMT mixed with a dollop of Adam and Joe”

Somehow I think Alto45 and Hoshal Patrick will get on!

And did we mention it’s free….?

Rupert, David and Silja LW xx

The Blanche Hudson Weekend, Horowitz and The Fireworks + DJs Spiral Scratch, Friday 30 March.

Pretty girls, pretty boys have you ever heard your mummy scream, noise annoys!!!

We sure have - Big Pink Cake and Librarians Wanted are very very excited about presenting a noisy noisy noisy time with THE BLANCHE HUDSON WEEKEND - rising from the ashes of The Manhattan Love Suicides, charming us with their sonic sound scapes and hypnotic pop… gorgeousness, immediacy and noise straight to the heart.

HOROWITZ - Fuzz, fuzz and more fuzz brilliance from tools you can trust, honest to goodness stuff, our indie pop hard core heroes!

THE FIREWORKS - Snap, crackle… P!O!P!, noise, noise and then ooh its gone all quiet… then ouch… me earholes… eeeeee!!!

PLUS PLUS PLUS those amazing we can’t wait to go berserk on the dancefloor SPIRAL SCRATCH DJs… YIPEEEEEEE!!!!!! indie pop sugary sweetness. More about that and the last six months soon (it’s been so much fun, and so hectic we haven’t had time to sit down and blog about it). But we just wanted to share some great events that we’ve been invited to take part in, as they are coming up very soon!

Evans the Death rocked our 1st birthday.

First of all, it’s An Evening With A Little Orchestra, courtesy of How Does It Feel to be Loved. That’s on Thursday 26th of January at the Buffalo Bar which is right next to Highbury and Islington Station, which again is on the super fast(?!) Victoria Line. So we want no excuses like it being a school night or it being too far out!

A Little Orchestra’s performance was one of our Indietracks favourites in 2011, and we hope to host them at some point this year too. On Thursday’s, the wonderful Haiku Salut (who we have partied with at Indietracks and swam with in lakes in Sweden, and who have also, and very beautifully so, played our night) will be joining them, as will our friends Matt and Sharon from the excellent A Fine Day For Sailing. The Madrigals who have also played LW and are just fantastic will also be playing, as will Shirley Lee, who we haven’t heard live but we think will be great. So do come along! Doors open at 8pm and we’ll be playing tunes from then.

Haiku Salut played LW in May 2011, stunning, like a soundtrack to Amelie II.

The Madrigals’ beautiful melodies at the Dogstar. (Photo by Johnny Raper)

We are big fans of the band and the people who organise it, and also excited to hear The Fireworks and The Give It Ups again. This time we’ll be at The Betsey Trotwood in Farringdon and after the bands the DJ sets will go on until 1am. As this is not a school night you definitely don’t have that excuse to not come out in case you DID use it on Thursday. We’ll be going straight from there to So Tough! So Cute! at the Drop in Stoke Newington to do some more dancing, hopefully to a bit of Broder Daniel.

The Fireworks with their heartshaped guitar played our birthday too.

Finally, we’ve been invited by the awesome Playhouse girls Natalie and Lauren to join them on the decks Saturday 11 Feb. Their nights are always complete pop (and rap and Rihanna and you name it) mayhem, pure fun and no-one taking themselves too seriously; never seen such cool dance moves. We’re excited about both guest DJing and dancing when Nat and Lauren are playing their tunes, so we really hope you’ll be on the dancefloor that night. Again, at the Drop in Stoke Newington, which has the best vibe about it and those dangerous Jaegers.

Ready to rock the party at the Drop. (Flyer by Playhouse)

And after that we can’t wait to dance, dance, dance at Popfest and for the next LW club night which will soon be announced. It was meant to be a one-off, a project in doing something we didn’t have a clue about how to do (organising gigs and DJing). But on an eve the Victoria Line was down and London was disrupted due to snow, a lovely crowd turned up and the bands were fantastic. It was such a heartwarming feeling. We just had to continue doing things we don’t know how to do for a bit longer…

EVANS THE DEATH headlined that first gig, and we’ll never ever forget them playing I’m So Unclean. They totally kicked *ss, nothing less, the coolest kids in London town - but also the nicest ones. And we are so happy to host them again, a year after - all grown-up - signed by Fortuna POP! and being well on their way to indiepop stardom! It will be very special to see them play again at our birthday.

T.O.Y.S played Librarians Wanted last summer, and their music has since been played in every LW DJ set. (Especially at Cosy Den in Stockholm the audience kept asking for more of their song ‘Doll’, when they were not asking for Shoreline, of course) Something in the vein of Joy Division - or New Order (only at NO’s best though!). T.O.Y.S are stars in our universe!

This is a LW first for WAKE THE PRESIDENT - they are a band we’ve been dreaming of putting on for quite a while now -they are pure awesomeness. They are coming down from Scotland to play, so let’s hope there are no trains stuck in the snow! NME says “each track glimmers with all the existential angst of an art student with a nasty hangover” - sounds perfect, right? We will be beaming and dancing around to this for sure! And apparently they hold their guitars very high, can anyone confirm this? We have yet to see them live! (a birthday wish come true)

+ DJs: LISA BOUVIER (Awesome Swedish songstress) + AJ MILLER (that tall sunglasses-wearing one outta T.O.Y.S) + us librarians if we haven’t overdosed on cake.

+ VERY SPECIAL BIRTHDAY GUESTS who will kickstart the party with a (not so) open-mic set!

A Fine Day for Christmas
Electrophönvintage
Erin K & Tash
Fountains
King of Cats
Lisa Bouvier
Mason
Owl + Mouse
The Fireworks
The Understudies
Tiny Birds

♥

+ there are a couple of more bands TBA!

These are all among our favourite musicians/people, and will be playing us a couple of songs each! This shining new star is playing her very first UK gig at Librarians Wanted & Cosy Den this Friday.

Amanda Mair. Photo: Labrador Records.

And then there are all these other fantastic Swedes playing too - with the gig being headlined by our UK heroes The Proctors. What an evening it will be…

And here are the band times for Friday:

Paddington DC 7.45-8.15
Amanda Mair 8.25-8.55
Friday Bridge 9.05-9.35
De Montevert 9.45-10.15
The Proctors 10.25-11

DJs inbetween and after (Mattias Jansson from Cosy Den + LW) - until 3am!

Remember your library card for a £1 discount… (Venue, Zigfrid von Underbelly, Hoxton Square)

LW & Cosy Den presents The Proctors/Friday Bridge/Paddington Distortion Combo/de Montevert/Amanda Mair Friday 11 Nov

Librarians Wanted are collaborating with our viking friends at Cosy Den to put together a fab Anglo-Swedish line-up here in London.

We had a great time DJing at Cosy Den in Stockholm in August, and we loved the bands Mattias Jansson picked for his festival. Our guests from abroad really are the top of the crop - and they are joined by a legendary UK band too - The Proctors!

The Swedes are: de Montevert, Friday Bridge, Paddington DC and Amanda Mair!

THE PROCTORS… when you hear their music it’s easy to think of our favourite The Pains of Being Pure at Heart. But it rather feels like Pains and other ‘new’ bands have found inspiration in the Proctors, not the other way around. When you go to a Proctors gig you drift away into swaying melancholia, and smiling - at the same time! This legendary band was formed in 1993, and after a break from the late 90s until quite recently we hope they’ll keep on playing forever!

DE MONTEVERT is getting a lot of radio time in Sweden at the moment for her single ‘Skyll på mig’, and she’s got a new single out 17 Oct. Ellinor Nilsson’s tunes are so catchy we’re singing them in the shower from first listen. And for those of you who, Swedish or not, tend to shout ‘Spela Shoreline!’ at indiepop discos, she may just play her lovely Broder Daniel cover!

FRIDAY BRIDGE is modern electronic pop mixed with pop music of the ’80s – sometimes with references to classical music. The duo describe themselves as: “Pop music de luxe: hummable tunes, danceable beats, quotable lyrics” and we very much agree! Someone said they had a touch of ABBA and something royal about them too. Exciting!

PADDINGTON DISTORTION COMBO is Calle Olsson from the awesome indie band The Bear Quartet (and also Blissful/Paper/Fireside). We heard him play the piano and sing at Cosy Den in the summer, and it was so beautiful we agains drifted into happy and sad daydreams. However, with Calle, you never quite know what’s going to happen. Except it’s going to be ace!

AMANDA MAIR brings ideas of a what a young, Swedish Dusty Springfield produced by Kate Bush might have sounded like if she arrived today. With melodies lit by sunlight and a voice that goes straight to the heart this is nothing less than pure magic. She has just released the single Doubt on legendary Labrador Records, and this is only the start…

And then Mr Cosy Den himself, Mattias Jansson, will be DJing alongside us librarians! And there will be free cake. And lots and lots of smiles and dancing!

See you 11 November!
David, Roo and Silja LW and Mattias CD xx

TICKETS £7 advance here, £8 on the door - £7 with a valid library card!
Venue: Zigfrid von Underbelly, Friday 11 Nov 2011, from 7pm.

I just uploaded “Librarians Wanted popcast no.3” to...

I just uploaded “Librarians Wanted popcast no.3” to www.mixcloud.com - listen now!

On Friday 21 October, we at Librarians Wanted will be launching...

On Friday 21 October, we at Librarians Wanted will be launching our first clubnight. Those LOUD boy-girl harmonies really really work for us!

Let’s Whisper = Vermont’s own Colin Clary and Dana Kaplan - also known from the fantastic band The Smittens, and Let’s Whisper is just as cute and charming and wonderful and makes us smile and our hearts beat fast, fast, fast.

The evening begins with the lovely Owl + Mouse’s magical ukulele pop. Hannah Botting’s melancholic but uplifting voice makes you want to go swimming in Australia with Jens Lekman and never return to reality.

And did we mention there is free cake? We’ll also be DJing inbetween the bands, and until it’s bedtime before a Monday hopefully less grey than usual.

You may wrap up warm in a bright red scarf and bobble hat on your way to the venue, but when you leave the gig you will feel like it’s still summer even on this cold October night!

Tickets: £7, £6 advance/£6 with a library card.

FB event here.

Looking forward to more fistpumping and cake eating with you, listening to these fantastic bands!
